Take Every Thought Captive

Philippians 4:8

“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”

Most people in the world have…just walked through something very difficult, are walking through something difficult right now or probably will be walking through something difficult very soon.

As believers we have a promise from the Lord. (John 16:33).

Our emotions are a powerful thing. Emotions create thoughts in our head…and those thoughts will dictate our decisions. Our decision then will determine what our behavior will be and then our behavior will shape our relationship.

Think about a relationship that is difficult in your life right now. Is there a relationship that causes raw emotions to rise up within you.

Positive or negative thoughts will either create healthy or unhealthy relationship. And then the cycle can start all over again…raw emotions… negative or sinful thoughts and then bad, unhealthy or sinful behavior. If we have unhealthy relationships, our thoughts are going to be affected in a negative way…unless…we take our thoughts captive!

If we do not take captive negative destructive thoughts, our lives become defined by endless cycles of sinful destruction. Neil Sumudre.

Our goal should be as believers to walk in such a way that is honoring to God. We need to recognize when our thoughts are going in a wrong direction and we need to do something about it.

How can we break free from negative and unhealthy spiraling thought patterns?

How many of us have continued to struggle sometimes with the same negative thoughts patterns or the same sin for many years?


James 4:7, submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.


  1. We check our emotions.
  2. We give them to the Lord.
  3. We repent of any negative and sinful thought.
  4. We say no to the flesh.
  5. We take every thought captive.
